Bridging the Gap: Executive Summary of the EHC 2026 Round Table on Bleeding Disorders and Cardiovascular Care in Europe
How do we protect the hearts of people living with bleeding disorders? In September 2026, the European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC) gathered patients, clinicians, and policymakers to tackle this question at a Round Table at the European Parliament in Brussels, hosted by MEP Aurelijus Veryga. The Executive Summary of the event is now available.
Round Table at the European Parliament: what we discussed
On 29 September 2026, the EHC convened policymakers, healthcare professionals, patient representatives, and other stakeholders in Brussels. The Round Table focused on the growing challenge of cardiovascular disease among people living with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
EHC President Tatjana Marković and MEP Veryga opened and closed the event, with the latter exploring the link between rare diseases and cardiovascular health in EU policy. Dr Bruna Gigante (Karolinska Institutet) addressed cardiovascular care and antithrombotic treatment for people with bleeding disorders, and EHC Vice-President Dr William McKeown spoke on unmet needs in bleeding disorders and comorbidities. Patient advocate Miguel Crato shared his own experience of living with haemophilia and cardiovascular disease.
Why cardiovascular care matters for people with bleeding disorders
As people with bleeding disorders age, cardiovascular disease is becoming a more common part of their health journey. Having a bleeding disorder does not protect against heart disease, yet cardiovascular care for this community is not always coordinated, individualised or equally accessible across Europe.
Key messages from the discussion
Participants highlighted the need for:
- Closer collaboration between haematologists and cardiologists
- Individualised treatment that balances bleeding and cardiovascular risks
- Holistic, patient-centred care that addresses ageing, mental health, and quality of life
- Patient involvement in treatment decisions
- Equitable access to care across Europe
- Stronger evidence and health data to inform future healthcare planning and improve patient outcomes
